Many people assume this feeling simply means they’re stressed. The explanation is a little more interesting than that. Sometimes your brain isn’t responding to what’s happening today. It’s still operating from what it learned yesterday.

A Brain Built to Predict
One of the brain’s most remarkable jobs is predicting what comes next. Every experience, conversation, success, disappointment, and challenge helps it build a mental model of the world. That model allows us to react quickly instead of starting from scratch every time something happens.¹
Imagine driving your usual route to work. You don’t consciously analyze every stop sign or traffic light because your brain has already learned what to expect. A Different Way to Read Your Day
The next time you catch yourself bracing for bad news, rushing to solve a problem that hasn’t appeared, or feeling tense before anything has actually happened, consider a different explanation.
Instead of asking, “Why am I so stressed?”
Try asking, “What has my brain learned to expect?”
That subtle shift changes the conversation entirely. It replaces self-criticism with curiosity. Rather than assuming something is wrong, you begin recognizing that your brain is doing exactly what it was designed to do: protect you by predicting what comes next.
The remarkable part is that the brain continues learning throughout life. Just as it learned to anticipate yesterday’s emergencies, it can gradually learn that today doesn’t require the same level of vigilance.³
Perhaps the most reassuring thought is this: not every feeling of urgency belongs to the present. Sometimes it’s simply yesterday’s lesson arriving a little late.
