The brain doesn’t simply create anxious thoughts—it coordinates a whole-body response designed to help you deal with whatever it believes requires your attention.³


This is one reason stress can feel so physical. The brain isn’t sending stress somewhere else; it’s asking different parts of the body to temporarily change how they work.


Why Everyone Feels Stress Differently

Have you ever noticed that two people can experience the same stressful week but describe completely different symptoms?


One develops tension headaches. Another loses their appetite. Someone else craves comfort foods, while another wakes up with a stiff neck every morning.


That doesn’t mean one person’s stress is “real” and another’s isn’t. Our bodies don’t all express stress in exactly the same way. Genetics, previous experiences, posture, sleep, physical activity, and even long-standing muscle habits can all influence where the effects become most noticeable.⁴


For one person, the neck and shoulders become the body’s preferred place to hold tension. For another, the digestive system becomes more sensitive because blood flow and digestive activity naturally shift during periods of heightened alertness.³


The location may differ. The underlying process is often surprisingly similar.


Your Body Is Following Instructions

Many people describe stress as though it settles into certain muscles, almost like it chooses a permanent home. In reality, something more interesting is happening. Your nervous system constantly adjusts muscle tension, breathing patterns, heart rate, and countless other functions without asking for permission. How to Do It

  1. Stand comfortably with your feet about shoulder-width apart and let your arms rest naturally at your sides.

  2. Take one slow, comfortable breath.

  3. Starting at the top of your body, briefly check in with yourself. Is your forehead tight? Are your teeth touching? Is your jaw clenched? Can you let those muscles soften?

  4. Let your attention move to your shoulders. Have they crept upward? Allow them to gently drop and relax.

  5. Notice your hands. Are they tightly curled or gripping something? Let your fingers loosen naturally.

  6. Take one more slow breath and notice your chest and stomach. Allow your breathing to become smooth and unforced.

  7. Before moving on with your day, simply notice how your body feels compared to when you started.


The entire movement takes about 30–60 seconds.


Recommended Frequency
