What Happens Inside Your Brain While You Sleep

The Brain’s Overnight Housekeeping

Perhaps the most surprising work happens on a level we can’t feel at all. As you sleep, tiny spaces between brain cells become slightly larger, allowing cerebrospinal fluid to circulate more efficiently through brain tissue. This process, known as the glymphatic system, helps remove metabolic waste products that naturally build up while we’re awake.⁵


Scientists are still learning exactly how this system influences long-term brain health, but one thing is clear: sleep provides an opportunity for important housekeeping that simply doesn’t happen as effectively during the day.


It’s an extraordinary reminder that even when nothing appears to be happening, your brain is quietly caring for itself.
