The Most Important Part Happens After Your Workout Ends

Most workouts end the same way. You catch your breath, wipe away the sweat, take a drink of water, and head home. It feels like the work is finished because the exercise is over. Yet from your body’s perspective, the workout was never the destination. It was the beginning of a process that will continue long after you’ve moved on with the rest of your day.
At that moment, it’s easy to assume the important work is over. After all, you’ve already exercised. The calories have been burned, the weights have been lifted, and the effort is behind you. If someone asked whether your body was stronger than it had been an hour earlier, the answer might seem obvious.
Surprisingly, it wouldn’t be.
Immediately after exercise, your body is actually a little less capable than it was before you started. Your energy stores have been used, tiny muscle fibers have been stressed, and your heart and lungs have worked hard to meet the demands you placed on them. Feeling tired isn’t evidence that you’ve become stronger. It’s evidence that you’ve given your body a reason to begin changing.

Exercise Starts the Conversation
Many of us grow up thinking of exercise as the thing that builds strength, endurance, or fitness. It’s an understandable assumption because exercise is the part we experience. Our bodies are remarkably similar. Much of the progress we hope for happens outside the moments we associate with exercise.
