How Daily Movement Creates Energy Instead of Draining It

There’s a moment that happens to many of us around the middle of the afternoon. You push your chair back from your desk, stand up, and for a second your body feels older than it did that morning. Your legs are stiff. Your back feels tight. You yawn, even though you slept reasonably well. The last thing you feel like doing is moving.


So you sit back down.


It seems like the logical choice. After all, if you’re low on energy, conserving what little you have should help. Yet that instinct may be exactly backward.


One of the most surprising things about the human body is that movement doesn’t simply spend energy—it helps create it. Understanding why can completely change the way you think about those moments when you’re feeling sluggish.



Your Body Was Built to Expect Movement

Imagine leaving your car parked in the driveway for several months. The battery slowly loses charge. The tires lose pressure. Fluids settle. Parts that are designed to move become less efficient simply because they aren’t being used.


Our bodies may not be machines in that sense, but they do respond to inactivity in a surprisingly similar way. Muscles help circulate blood. Joints rely on movement to distribute lubricating fluid. Even the systems that deliver oxygen and nutrients throughout the body function more efficiently when we’re regularly active.¹


When movement becomes scarce, the body gradually shifts into a lower-performance mode. That doesn’t happen because it assumes you’re conserving energy—it happens because it adapts to the demands being placed on it.


The human body, your body, is remarkably efficient. If it believes movement isn’t necessary, it slowly becomes less prepared for it. That’s why long periods of sitting often leave us feeling more sluggish than refreshed.


The Energy Loop Most People Never Notice

Think about the last day you felt unusually tired. Maybe work was demanding. Maybe you slept poorly. Maybe the weather was gloomy. The thought of exercising probably sounded awful. So you skipped your walk, stayed on the couch after dinner, or decided today just wasn’t the day...completely understandable.

But here’s the hidden pattern. The less we move because we feel tired, the fewer opportunities our bodies have to stimulate the very systems that help us feel energized in the first place.² Movement increases circulation, delivering more oxygen and nutrients throughout the body. It also signals muscles, the heart, and even the brain that they’re needed right now.³

It’s a little like opening the curtains in a dark room. The room didn’t create the sunlight. It simply allowed it in. Often, movement doesn’t manufacture energy—it gives your body access to energy that was already available.


Why the First Five Minutes Feel Like the Hardest

Nearly everyone has experienced it. You convince yourself to take a walk despite not feeling like it. The first few minutes feel slow and heavy. Then, almost without noticing, your pace naturally picks up. Your thoughts become clearer. The walk feels easier than expected. That isn’t just your imagination.


As activity begins, heart rate gradually increases, breathing becomes more efficient, blood flow improves, and muscles warm up.³ Your brain also releases chemicals associated with alertness and improved mood, helping explain why many people report feeling mentally refreshed after even moderate physical activity.⁴


The hardest part of movement is often convincing your body to switch modes. Once it does, the experience frequently feels very different than what your tired brain predicted. It’s one of the great paradoxes of human physiology–the moment you least want to move is often the moment movement helps the most.


Movement Doesn’t Have to Look Like Exercise

When people hear the word exercise, many immediately picture sweat, heavy breathing, or a packed gym. But your body doesn’t organize movement into categories the way we do. It doesn’t know whether you’re walking the dog, pulling weeds in the garden, carrying groceries, climbing stairs, dancing in the kitchen while dinner cooks, or taking a quick jog around the block.


It simply recognizes that you’re moving.


Research consistently shows that regular physical activity of many different forms contributes to better cardiovascular health, stronger muscles and bones, improved mood, and lower risk for numerous chronic diseases.⁵ That means energy isn’t reserved for people with perfect workout routines.


It often belongs to people who simply keep their bodies engaged throughout the day.

The question shifts from “Did I exercise today?” to “How often did my body get a chance to do what it was designed to do?” That’s a much more inviting question.


Think of Movement as an Investment, Not an Expense

Many of us unknowingly treat movement like money leaving a bank account. “I’ve had a busy day.” “I’m already tired.” “I don’t have enough energy left.” But what if movement works more like making a deposit than paying a bill?


A short walk can sharpen your thinking before an afternoon meeting. Stretching for a few minutes can reduce the stiffness that makes everything else feel harder. Standing up regularly throughout the day may leave you feeling less fatigued by evening than sitting continuously for hours.⁶ Not because those activities are magical, but because your body responds positively when it’s reminded that it’s meant to move.


Movement isn’t something your body tolerates. It’s something your body expects.


Tomorrow, if you catch yourself feeling too tired to move, pause before assuming rest is the only answer. Sometimes the quickest path to feeling more energized isn’t finding more energy first—it’s giving your body a reason to create it.

How to Do It

  1. Stand tall with your feet about shoulder-width apart and your arms relaxed at your sides.

  2. Raise both arms overhead as you take a slow, deep breath, reaching toward the ceiling without shrugging your shoulders.

  3. Keeping your back flat and knees slightly bent, hinge at your hips and slowly lower your hands toward your shins, ankles, or the floor—only as far as is comfortable.

  4. Pause for one or two seconds, then press through your heels and return to standing, reaching overhead once again before lowering your arms.

  5. Repeat using slow, controlled movements while breathing naturally throughout the sequence.


Recommended Repetitions

  • 8–10 repetitions

  • Perform 1–2 sets

  • Move slowly and match each movement with your breathing


Practical Tip

Avoid bending through the back instead of hinging at the hips. Imagine you’re closing a car door with your hips while keeping your chest proud and your back long. The goal isn’t to touch the floor—it’s to let your hips do the work while your spine stays in a comfortable, neutral position.


Why It Works

After long periods of sitting, your body can become “stuck” in one position. This movement gently reverses that by encouraging your hips, shoulders, and upper back to move through a fuller range of motion while activating the muscles that help you stand tall. Within a minute or two, many people notice they feel looser, more upright, and mentally refreshed—not because they exercised intensely, but because they reminded their body how to move.
