Movement That Helps Calm Inflammation

You finish a workout, your legs feel tired, maybe a little sore, and for the next day or two your muscles remind you that you did something different. It certainly doesn’t feel like you “calmed” anything. In fact, if you’ve ever been stiff after a long walk, a day of yardwork, or your first strength session in a while, you might reasonably assume that exercise is creating inflammation rather than helping it.
In a way, it is. Physical activity creates a temporary stress that your body has to respond to. Muscles work harder, energy demands increase, tissues repair, and your immune system becomes involved in the recovery process. Yet people who move regularly tend to have healthier inflammatory profiles over time.¹ ² How can something that briefly adds stress help a body become better at handling it?
That contradiction reveals one of the more interesting things about movement. Your muscles aren’t simply moving you from one place to another. They’re also communicating with the rest of your body.

Your Body Is Supposed to Respond
Earlier this week, we talked about inflammation as an alarm system. When something threatens or damages the body, inflammation helps organize the response. The problem begins when that alarm remains unnecessarily elevated for too long. A healthy inflammatory system isn’t one that never turns on. It’s one capable of responding when necessary and settling again when the job is done.
Movement gives us an interesting way to see that process in action. A workout, climbing several flights of stairs, carrying groceries, or taking a brisk walk all ask your body to respond. Your heart beats faster, muscles contract, energy gets used, and dozens of systems begin adjusting to meet the demand. Once the activity ends, another process begins as the body works to recover and adapt.
Researchers have found that exercising muscles release signaling molecules—often called myokines—that communicate with other tissues and participate in processes involving metabolism, immune activity and inflammation.³ Scientists are still learning exactly how these signals work together, and their effects depend on the type, intensity and duration of activity. But the larger picture has become increasingly interesting: muscle appears to function as more than machinery.
Every time you move, then, you aren’t simply spending calories. You’re asking your body to respond, adjust and recover. That repeated practice may be one reason regular movement matters so much.
The Benefit Happens Between the Workouts, Too
This changes the way we can think about temporary soreness after exercise. A challenging workout can produce a short-term inflammatory response, but that isn’t necessarily a sign that something has gone wrong. Your body has been challenged, and now it has work to do. Over time, repeated activity followed by adequate recovery can contribute to adaptations associated with better metabolic health and a healthier inflammatory environment.¹ ²
Think about what happens when you begin walking after being relatively inactive. At first, a mile may feel surprisingly demanding. Your breathing increases, your legs fatigue, and perhaps you’re sore the next morning. Several weeks later, that same mile may barely register as a challenge. The walk didn’t change. Your body did.
Inflammation can be viewed through a similar lens. We don’t necessarily want to prevent the body from reacting to physical stress. Part of health is having systems capable of responding when they’re needed and then returning toward normal afterward. That is very different from living with an alarm that seems to remain quietly humming in the background.
Movement Doesn’t Have to Look Like Exercise
We’ve spent decades turning movement into a scheduled event. You change clothes, drive to a gym, exercise for 45 minutes, shower, and return to the rest of your day. If that event doesn’t happen, many people conclude that they “didn’t exercise” and therefore didn’t do much for their health.
Your body experiences the day differently. It knows you walked the dog, carried laundry upstairs, spent an hour gardening, took the stairs, walked around the block after dinner, or repeatedly got up and down while cleaning the house. Those activities may never appear in a workout log, but your muscles still contracted and your body still responded.
Formal exercise absolutely has value. Aerobic training and strength training provide benefits that occasional household movement cannot completely replace. But health isn’t determined only by what happens during the hour labeled workout. What happens during the other waking hours matters, too, and that gives us far more opportunities to influence our health than most of us realize.
Your Morning Workout Doesn’t Erase Your Chair
Picture two people who both exercise for 30 minutes in the morning. One spends most of the next ten hours sitting. The other gets up periodically, walks across the office, takes the stairs, does a few chores, walks after lunch and generally finds reasons to keep moving. Technically, both people exercised. Their days, however, were not equally active.
Research examining prolonged sitting has found that interrupting long periods of sedentary time with brief activity—especially light walking—can improve short-term responses such as blood glucose and insulin compared with uninterrupted sitting.⁴ ⁵ A 2026 systematic review and meta-analysis involving 53 studies found that brief activity breaks reduced post-meal glucose and insulin responses, with walking breaks showing particularly favorable results.⁵
This doesn’t mean you need an alarm telling you to march around the house every 20 minutes. It means sitting and moving aren’t simply opposites that cancel each other out at the end of the day. The body experiences the pattern of the entire day, not merely the workout we completed before breakfast.
That changes what an ordinary Tuesday can look like. A trip upstairs, five minutes outside, walking while you’re on the phone, or getting out of your chair between tasks may seem too insignificant to count. Viewed as part of the larger pattern, those moments begin to look quite different.
More Isn’t Automatically Better
Once we hear that movement may help regulate inflammation, it’s tempting to assume harder and longer must be better. That can quickly turn a helpful idea into another fitness competition. Your body still needs recovery, and the stress created by exercise doesn’t occur in isolation from everything else happening in your life.
A demanding workout is stress. Poor sleep is stress. Work can be stressful, and illness, inadequate nutrition and emotional strain can all add to the load your body is managing. Piling intense exercise onto an already overwhelmed system isn’t necessarily the smartest response. The ability to recover is part of what makes exercise beneficial in the first place.
For many people, especially after years of inconsistent activity, the best starting point may be remarkably ordinary: walk more often, break up long periods of sitting, strength train appropriately, recover well and gradually build capacity. Intensity certainly has its place, but consistency gives your body something intensity alone cannot—repeated opportunities to adapt.
The Movement You Almost Didn’t Count
This may be the idea worth carrying into the rest of the week. The five-minute walk while dinner cooks, walking to someone’s office instead of sending a message, taking the long way through the grocery store, gardening, vacuuming, carrying bags, climbing stairs and standing up from your desk because you’ve been sitting longer than you realized all create opportunities for movement.
None of those moments needs to become a workout. They can simply become part of a life that contains more movement. When we only count the exercise that leaves us sweaty, sore or exhausted, we overlook many of the opportunities our bodies receive every day.
Your muscles don’t know whether you call something exercise. They simply know when they’re being asked to work. Once you begin looking at movement that way, the question changes from “Did I exercise today?” to something much more useful: “How much of my day did I actually spend moving?”

How To Do It
Stand comfortably with your feet about hip-width apart. Keep your knees relaxed and look straight ahead.
Bring your left hand beside your head, keeping the elbow comfortably out to the side. Avoid pulling or pressing on your head or neck.
Lift your right knee as you gently rotate your upper body toward it. Bring your left elbow toward the raised knee. They can touch if that feels comfortable, but reaching them toward one another is enough.
Return to your starting position with both feet on the floor and your body facing forward.
Switch sides. Lift your left knee while rotating your right elbow toward it.
Continue alternating sides at a slow, comfortable rhythm. Think about turning through your midsection rather than simply moving your elbow up and down.

Recommended Frequency/Duration
Begin with 5–8 repetitions on each side, alternating as you go. Move slowly enough that you feel balanced and in control rather than trying to create speed.
Try 1–2 sets, resting whenever you need to. There is no required hold at the top—simply bring the knee and opposite elbow toward one another, return to standing, and switch sides.
If lifting your knee high makes balancing difficult, raise it only as far as feels comfortable. The elbow and knee do not have to touch for the movement to be effective.
Common Mistake
Mistake: A common mistake is becoming so focused on touching the elbow to the knee that you hunch forward or pull your head down to make them meet. The movement should come from lifting the knee and gently rotating through your torso—not forcing your neck toward your leg.
Instead: Think “knee up, body turns.” If your elbow and knee naturally meet, great. If they don’t, the movement still counts.
